Sun science - the basics

There are two wavebands of ultra-violet light in sunlight that reach the Earth's surface: UVA and UVB.

How do they harm our skin?

UVB rays cause most of the burning effect of sunlight.
UVA causes premature ageing of the skin, as well as some burning.

Your skin needs to be protected from both UVA and UVB simultaneously

Most skin cancers can be prevented using today's technologically advanced sunscreens. These give us protection from UVA/UVB rays, while allowing a tan to develop.

Which sun protection is right for you?

There are two important ratings to guide your choice when selecting a sunscreen: Sun Protection Factor (SPF) and UVA star rating.

The SPF measures how much longer you are safe to stay in the sun. For instance, an SPF 30 sun lotion allows you to stay in the sun for thirty times longer than if you were not using any protection.

Your tolerance to the sun's rays depends on your skin type. Use our SPF chart to determine
the best sunscreen for you.

Select a skin type, select a destination, and then use the recommended SPF to protect the health and appearance of your family's skin, both now and in the future.

The star rating refers to the ratio of UVA to UVB protection. A five star rated product gives similar levels of protection against both UVA and UVB. One star (minimum) indicates that the product protects mostly against UVB.
